La Dolce Vita Episode 5
ay_link May 18th, 2008

Episode 5 was obviously a showcase for Jeong Bo Seok’s character (sorry, I think I messed up on his name before. His name is Ha Dong Won, not Dong Wook, so it’ll be corrected from now onwards.) And though I have never seen him in any drama before this one — apparently he was in the KBS2 historical drama “Dae Jo Young”, after episode 5, I’m really quite impressed at his acting. Playing as a scumbag husband, a loving father, yet very rich and successful in his career, usually tends to make me despise the character no matter what. But Dong Won is actually an interesting character, and the most important thing is that he’s smart and manipulative. He seems to know what he’s doing and him playing with ‘fire’ is not that he did it recklessly.
In short, Ha Dong Won rocked this episode, and his sleazy character is getting more and more interesting. This episode brought us even more closer to each character, and especially zooming in more to his character as a husband, a father and a man.
Thumbs up, episode 5 is such a great one that I was pretty much intrigued again to keep on following this series. (despite of the low ratings it’s been getting every week. Sigh. I guess ahjumma dramas are still the #1 watched TV drama in Korea. Though I’m glad, SBS weekend drama “Happiness” which I’ve been watching all this while is placed second to KBS2 weekend killer ratings “Angry Mom”)

Picking up where we left off last week, we got Hye Jin alone in her gorgeous home, doing her chores — vacuuming, doing laundry, watering the plants, cleaning furnitures, etc. Btw, the jazzy background music in this scene is an excellent choice, I really can’t wait for the OST to come out now. She was trying to set it right, but this picture on the wall which seems to be leaning to the left uneven. Symbolism? her unbalanced life, the problem in her marriage…
Then we see Hye Jin sitting alone, sipping her coffee while listening to Billie Holiday’s LD from her collections. She reminisced the old days, it was when she and her husband, both sitting in the living room, listening to Billie Holiday together.
Hye Jin: Do you remember?
Dong Won: What?
Hye Jin: You and me… like this…
You don’t remember?
Dong Won: What?
Since he doesn’t remember, she leads him up to dance with her while reminiscing the night they danced together.

They danced lovingly, and this picture tells me that she actually had a good marriage back then before she found out about the affair. What a pity.
In the next scene, Hye Jin was making dinner, with her two daughters waiting on the table with her husband. The girls demanded to have their spagetti as promised, but Hye Jin forgot to buy the ingredients for spagetti and ended up making chicken tonkatsu (japanese style fried breaded chicken). Na Rae, her youngest, was still demanding for spagetti, but Hye Jin couldn’t take her nagging anymore. “I said I’ll make the spagetti later!” she snapped and the girls were surprised to see her so upset.

They both got silenced by her but Dong Won quickly saved the situation by telling the girls to enjoy the delicious tonkatsu and pouring the sauce for them both. Hye Jin held her breath and walked away from the table, back to the kitchen.
After dinner, Dong Won went to his studyroom, while Hye Jin tucked the girls to sleep in their cute bedroom. Then she walked downstairs, and got confronted by the husband.
Dong Won: Why did you get upset to the girls?
Hye Jin: I didn’t get upset at them.
Dong Won: So? Was it because of me?

Dong Won: Who’s that person?
The person you said you started to like.
Hye Jin: You can’t start from there.
Dong Won:Then where should we start?
Start from the very beginning?
When we first met?
Tell me where you want to start?

Hye Jin: Do you love me?
Dong Won: What?
Hye Jin: Did you marry me out of pity or because I didn’t let you go?
You didn’t even love me…
Dong Won didn’t answer her and walked away from the kitchen to the living room.

By this time, Na Ri walked out of her room and heard her parents fighting downstairs. Dong Won and Hye Jin looked up and hurriedly, Hye Jin walked upstairs to make sure Na Ri is okay.
Na Ri asked if her mom got a fight with her dad. She apologized to her and they hugged.
Meanwhile, Dong Won went back to his studyroom, furious and mad to himself.

Dong Won: You… really want to get a divorce?
Hye Jin: What about you?
Dong Won: I asked you the question.

Hye Jin: You have a woman that you like!
Dong Won: Is that what you want to know?
What are you doing to do if you know?
You already know.
Then why do you ask?
The next morning, Dong Won went to work, and Hye Jin went to a pet store to buy a puppy for the girls.

Here is the first time she met Da Ae in public.

Da Ae adores the puppy which Hye Jin has been eyeing to buy for the girls. But since she got shocked and couldn’t say anything, she just left the store, while Da Ae seemed to be surprise also to see her.
At first I thought Da Ae doesn’t know who Hye Jin is. But, actually she knows. And yes, she’s pretending.
After Hye Jin left, Da Ae bought the puppy and carried her home. I feel sorry for the cute shihtzu puppy in this next scene though. Park Si Yeon doesn’t seem to be a dog-lover by the way she carried the puppy like some toy. >_> Poor puppy… she must be dizzy being carried along like that. Aigoo… O_O so rough…
Without Da Ae realizing it, Hye Jin followed her home to her luxury apartment. From downstairs, she looked up to see where Da Ae lives. And not long after that, just before Hye Jin was about to leave, a car came in and we see Dong Won walked out of the car, looking up to Da Ae’s apartment.

Apparently Dong Won just heard the news about where Da Ae lives now. So he hurriedly drove over from his work and stop by at Da Ae’s apartment.

Da Ae opened the door and shocked to see Dong Won again. She tried to close the door but it was too late. Dong Won let himself in and seeing Da Ae again, he was so thrilled and happy, he creeped me out!
Bravo for great acting on both in this scene. I can actually feel how Da Ae must’ve felt in this situation, and oh god, poor shihtzu!! She dropped her when Dong Won freakishly grabbed to hug her (more like forcing her to be hugged)

The poor dog looks so confused on the floor…hehe.. sigh.
Dong Won: Nothing changed, right?
*then they hugged, and it seems like she forgave him. What the…?

Da Ae tried to let go herself from his embrace, but Dong Won insisted.
And we all know what happened after this when we see Da Ae on the bed and Dong Won, buttoning his shirt after he got out of the bathroom. Yikes.

Next scene we see Hye Jin getting into a car accident (her fault), on the way back home. She was so stressed out that she couldn’t even drive properly and bumped into a car behind her. She was cutting a lane and hit the car. The owner made a fuss and she was about to call her husband but then she hesistated.
At home, the nanny cooked spagetti for the girls, Na Ri and Na Rae. But the girls refused to eat it.
Nanny: Why are you not eating?
Are you not hungry?
Na Rae: I’m hungry.
Nanny: Then why aren’t you eating?
Na Ri: It doesn’t taste good!
Then at night, the girls were talking with her mom and they told her about what the nanny cooked for lunch. Meanwhile, Dong Won was driving home from Da Ae’s place. He got home and asked about his girls, but he noticed something’s wrong. “Are you sick” he asked. “No”, Hye Jin replied and walked out to the kitchen to prepare his dinner. Later on in this scene, Hye Jin told him about the car accident and Dong Won was so concerned. He acted like he cares to much that I can almost get fooled also. What a sly.
The next morning, we finally see Lee Dong Wook (first appearance throughout the whole episode, about 41 minutes into ep 5). Da Ae took the dog to Scarlett and they met. Joon Soo asked her if that’s her dog, and what its name was. Then he gave the name “Bok Soon-ee” for the dog. And Da Ae likes it.
Then they went to a restaurant, while the dog is playing outside.
Da Ae asked for Joon Soo’s real name. Apparently when the detective asked her some questions at the airport, she finally knew that Joon Soo is not the real name of Seong Gu (the dead friend of Joon Soo), because the detective told her that his name is Kang Seong Gu (while showing the picture of Seong Gu).
So in case anyone is still confused, Seong Gu and Joon Soo made a bet. Seong Gu insisted that Joon Soo used his name, to see if he can get the girl by being him.

Joon Soo: That’s not important.
Da Ae: Then what is?
There is more. You betted on me?
Joon Soo: I’ll explain it one by one.
Da Ae: Do it all at the same time. What is the truth?
Don’t.
Joon Soo: Let me explain!
Da Ae: I don’t want to know.
Joon Soo: You just asked me!

Da Ae: Then answer one thing did you fool around with me?
Was it only fooling around to you?
Let’s go!
You used me like a puppet.
You move me with your strings anyway you like.
Was it fun?
I bet it was.
Joon Soo: One month
Da Ae: One month for what?
Joon Soo: Maybe even two months or it could be shorter.
Da Ae: You’re not making sense again.
Joon Soo: One or two months not more than that.
Before that it will be all over.
Da Ae: What will?
What will be over?
Will you die, Joon Soo?
Joon Soo: Not that.Da Ae: Then why are you trying to act cool?
A married woman acts when she only has a month or two to live,…
if you die in a month or so I…
What?
Joon Soo: Can you just.. meet me again?
Da Ae: Then tell me who you really are.
Who is Joon Soo and Seong Gu?*flashback:
Seung Gu: Starting from today you are going to be me and I am going to be you.
Joon Soo becomes Kang Seong Gu. Then try to win over that girl and see how long she lasts with your own eyes.Da Ae: Is that such a hard question?
Joon Soo: Can’t you forget the past?
Da Ae: He says to forget everything.
Joon Soo: I wasn’t the one who betted on you. It was Seong Gu.
My friend Seong Gu.Da Ae: You played me because it was fun.
Joon Soo: What is fun about that?
Da Ae: You live for playing women.
How rich is Seong Gu?
Well he has to be pretty rich if he has a summer house…
Is that why you live off of Seong Gu?
I have to feed my dog.

On the way home, Da Ae’s dog refused to walk. hehe.. so cute. The shihtzu didn’t want to move an inch and she had to carry her home. Then we got another flashback of Seung Gu, while Joon Soo was still sitting alone in the restaurant.
Hye Jin, who was silently stalking and waiting for Da Ae. She was shocked to see her there, and was about to leave, but Da Ae started a conversation. Asking her where her car is, and if she’d like to get the dog. So to cut the story short, Da Ae gave Hye Jin the dog. And Hye Jin drove home with the dog sitting so cutely next to her in the passenger seat.

Then we got another flashback. It was when Dong Won stopped by at Da Ae’s during his morning jogs.
Da Ae asked him what he told his wife, and he told her that he went jogging. So apparently she knows exactly what’s been going on and she knows Hye Jin and the girls, Na Ri and Na Rae.
At night, when Dong Won got home after work, as usual he asked where the girls were, and if they were asleep. Hye Jin said, how could they be asleep when they have a dog with them.
And when the girls brought down the dog with them from upstairs, the dog recognized Dong Won and liked him instantly.
And this is the last scene… at his studyroom.

Hye Jin: What is it that you like about her?
Is it because she’s young?
Dong Won: Honey…
It’s just one affair.
Hye Jin: It wasn’t just once.
You bought her a car and a house
Dong Won: When did you find out?
Hye Jin: Does it matter?
Dong Won: Don’t beat around the bush and answer the question.
Let’s stop talking about it. It’s over.
Hye Jin: Over?
Dong Won: Is that why you left home? Because I did that?
Hye Jin: Dogs can’t lie. The moment she saw you, she liked you right away.

Dong Won: What?
Hye Jin: Don’t worry. That girl didn’t know who I was.
And she just gave me the puppy.
Dong Won: You went there?
Hye Jin: Let’s stop talking about it.
I am foolish to talk to someone who isn’t sorry about happened.
Dong Won: How clean are you?
What did you say in Sapporo?
What? “I started to like someone”?
Is that what you did in Sapporo?!?

This is one gripping series. I love the tension and the mystery, but by ep. 4, the flashbacks are getting into the way of the story. It’s OK to have flashbacks in the first 2 ep, but come on! I want to get into the story and not be sidetracked by flashbacks. It’s very tiring watching a series this way.
yeah it can get annoying but the flashback scenes play an important part in the drama, actually it seemed like the whole drama itself is a flashback since the drama focuses on what happened that led to tragedy for Lee Dong-wook’s character…maybe it’s in the way the drama is handled but sometimes I get confused as well so I have to watch it all over again to get what it means
