La Dolce Vita Episode 9

Joon Soo is one complicated character, isn’t he?
No wonder Lee Dong Wook said this is the hardest role he ever got so far, and as the story progresses, I’m still 50-50 about how exactly Joon Soo feels about Da Ae (including his recent ’stalker’ activities towards Hye Jin). But one thing for sure, I think Lee Dong Wook did a great job here, especially when he has to potray certain insanity level being given a past like that (I’ll explain more later in episode 10), and because the script is this good, it seems like all the cast are doing one heck of a marvelous job. (Yes, including the dead guy, Seong Gu, in which the actor appears in the new KBS drama, “Women in the sun”)

The episode picks up where we left off, which is the swimming pool, after Joon Soo pushed Hye Jin into the water, and then he dived in himself (pictured above) *since they put effort and used the waterproof camera, this angle is capped-worthy, don’t ya think? Hm, wonder how many takes they took to get this right… with Lee Dong Wook diving and lookin’ like dat. Keke…*

And as Joon Soo surfaced up and did that “Look-at-me-I’m-so-hot” shot with his wet hair, he went up and we can see some eyes staring at his hotness… which made Hye Jin a bit shy herself…

Joon Soo is not a dumb guy, so he noticed this and kinda enjoying it himself (being-started at, that is). He knows exactly how bashful Hye Jin was, and I think he kinda liked the attention all to himself also.

So after Hye Jin took a shower, and getting ready, as she went out to her car, Joon Soo approached her and followed from behind. He asks her if she knew why he ran away (in Japan), and that it was because he thought of committing a suicide when he was in Japan, so he got to get away from there in order to live. But after meeting her, he suddenly wants to live again.

Then he started to talk about how some people say that if you live with hope, something good will eventually happen. Joon Soo asked if she believes that, because he doesn’t, and that he thought it was all a lie. He has learnt this when he was young…. that life becomes easier if you throw away hope.

He hates that man who’d cheat on this beautiful woman, but he had hope on the man (Dong Won), and apparently the hope came crushing down. So Joon Soo asked her if it isn’t true that a man who got his success just used her as a play thin. It wasn’t important anymore to him because the woman in front of him (referring to Hye Jin, of course), is now more important to him. She’s the one who could be there for him.

Then he went on and told her that it was the same for her since she needed someone she could lean on, even if it wasn’t him. Hye Jin gave him the stare, and then she kept on searching for her car. Joon Soo told her this is the 2nd floor and that she parked on the third floor.

Then after all that talk, and Hye Jin was about to leave Joon Soo there alone before she came back and made u-turn, they ended up sitting in this place to have a talk.

Joon Soo was trying to get it across to her to give it a thought, another try, another chance. That what happened in Otaru, as though they had been a huge mistake, he knew that it wasn’t just simply a mistake. But Hye Jin took this idea as if Joon Soo felt sorry and guilty towards her, so she said she’s okay with what happened. She doesn’t hold a grudge on him and that she thinks about her kids and her marriage. To her kids, a family is more important. To cut it short, Joon Soo then told her point-blank that he likes her.

*It makes me think… does he really… like her? or is he just messing around with his mind and with Hye Jin because of his own insecurity with the whole Seong Gu and Da Ae thing? When I first watched this part, I was like, oh okay, then so Joon Soo has really started to think about Hye Jin seriously. He does really like her.*

He said he’ll wait for her, until she’s ready… though Hye Jin is still unsure about what she’ll do next. To still hanging on to her husband and her marriage, or to walk out of it.

After Joon Soo left, he went home and checked the mail. Threw some letters that are addressed to Seong Gu and as he was about to go upstairs, he met with the security guard again. The ahjussi told him that the detective is upstairs, waiting for him. And so, as he walked out of the elevator, Detective Park was already outside waiting for Joon Soo with that fishy look.

They went out to eat and Detective Park asked Joon Soo a few suspicious questions about Seong Gu. He knew that both Joon Soo and Seong Gu went to Japan together. As we knew already, Joon Soo denied everything that happened in Japan, but this makes it even more suspicious to Detective Park.

Joon Soo tried to keep his cool but as he felt uncomfortable with this kind of interview, he just wanted to keep it short and before he left, he said:

Joon Soo: If I hear anything from Seong Gu, I’ll give you a call.

Then we have a flashback, the night of the accident… the reason why Seong Gu went to Japan on the first place…

Joon Soo was driving, and in the backseat, the two lovers, Seong Gu and Soo Jung were goofing around. Joon Soo stared at them through the rear mirror, and somewhat somehow, the accident happened. Soo Jung was thrown off the car in one instance. If you don’t remember who Soo Jung is, try rewatching the club scene when Joon Soo and Seong Gu first met Da Ae and Byuk Ja. Soo Jung was the other girl who left first.

When it happened, Seong Gu was sitting in the back with her and they both were goofing around, and probably because he was drunk, he kinda ‘pushed’ her and so she fell off (they had the top down), or, it could be that it’s a mere accident and Soo Jung was also drunk and so she ‘went’ outside by herself. At this point, your guess is as good as mine.

So because of all this, Seong Gu was ’sent’ out to left Korea, until they resolved the matter. And so he left the next morning, saying goodbye only to Joon Soo, headed to Japan. Joon Soo told Seong Gu to keep quiet and to keep it low. Don’t call him, don’t call home until this matter is behind them. Joon Soo knew that the president, Seong Gu’s father will resolve this matter and clear his name.

After Seong Gu left, Joon Soo went on a secret mission to forge Seong Gu’s signature.

At night, after Hye Jin picked up her daughters from cram school, they met a guest waiting outside her house with luggages. Her good friend, who married a Japanese man, Sung Sook was there.

Na Ri and Na Rae welcomed her with joy and screamed, “Ahjumma!”
Hye Jin also looked happy and surprised to see Sung Sook, as she arrived without notice.

They went inside, and as Sung Sook got settled in the living room, admiring the house, the two girls, Na Ri and Na Rae brought Bok-soon the doggy to meet the guest.

At first Sung Sook said it’s cute, but she refused to hold her when the girls tried to give Bok-soon to her. She hates dogs, she said. Hehe… so Hye Jin told the girls not to bother their guest, and to bring Bok-soon upstairs.

Sung Sook complimented on the house and how good Dong Won must’ve been taking care of Hye Jin and their daughters. Sung Sook then asked if she can stay with her, in which brought attention to Hye Jin that Sung Sook might want to stay with her for a while. She hates the idea having a guest when her marriage is having a ‘turbulence’. So Hye Jin wasn’t fond to the idea at all, and they got interrupted as Dong Won came home from work.

As Dong Won came in, his daughters greeted him from upstairs. As jerk and as bad Dong Won is being the husband, he is still Na Ri and Na Rae’s father, and he loves them.

(and the good thing is, we can see it from the way he plays with them, or taking them to school. If only he doesn’t carry on with the affair and treated Hye Jin better, he’d be a great husband-material hehe… sigh.)

And so, after he greeted the kids and noticed Sung Sook was there. After he insisted Sung Sook to stay with them in their house, he then had to leave because of work, or so the excuse he gave to his wife. Wow, little did I know or see it coming, but he had to leave because he has an important date with Da Ae.

Dong Won planned everything, including the private room for Da Ae to celebrate this special day.

So, at the restaurant, Da Ae was already there alone, waiting for Dong Won. “Have you been waiting long?” Dong Won asked. Then as he snapped his fingers, the waiter rolled in an expensive red wine, Romanee-Conti, to which Dong Won praised him for the excellent choice.

First, Da Ae asked the waiter how much the wine is. So Dong Won asked her, “You really don’t know?”

So she took a guess herself, and said, “Huh? My birthday?” and Dong Won confirmed it by saying, “Happy burstday” :D *haha, sorry I couldn’t help it. Of course he meant to say “happy birthday”*

Then the camera shifted back to Hye Jin and Sung Sook.

Hye Jin was cleaning up her husband’s desk when Sung Sook suddenly sneaked in and asked what she’s doing. Sung Sook was really impressed with the studyroom (of course, with 6 monitors and all, along with the globe and that plasmaTV lol), she took a seat and started teasing her. Touching the mouse and admiring them all, while Hye Jin looked so frustrated…

Back at the restaurant, after Da Ae blew the candles, Dong Won gave her the present. A pair of diamond earrings. “Diamond that Da Ae likes” Dong Won said. “Try it on…” and so she did and asked, “How is it? pretty?” “Really pretty.” Dong Won confirmed. And before he offered a toast, Da Ae excused herself to go to the bathroom. She wanted to see how the earrings look like on her.

Then to make the story short, in the ladies room, she stared at herself, and quickly took off the earrings. This is a great scene that doesn’t happen a lot in kdramas. And I applause Park Si Yeon for acting the way that she did as Da Ae. She made it believable to me that in a way she felt guilty of getting such an expensive gift. But also kinda reflecting on how she tried so hard not to act carelessly in accepting this kind of gift. So she went back to the table and Dong Won asked her why she took it off.

Dong Won: Why?
You don’t like it?

Then they went to a noraebang (karaoke room), and met with a bunch of drunken guys. Dong Won and the guys got into a fight and they ended up in a police station.

Dong Won looked like he got a few bruises and a cut near his left ear. The police blamed on the guys and asked Dong Won if he’d like to press charges, but Dong Won said no. And so the police officer told the guys to apologize for their misbehavior.

Outside the post office, Da Ae still worried about Dong Won and asked if he’s okay. Dong Won then noticed that the earrings were gone. “Those earrings?” she asked. “Yeah, weren’t you wearing them before?” Dong Won asked. Then Da Ae did these… *point at caps*

She gave him a dumb-look… then…

She had it all along with her. Dong Won smiled in relief and then they walked together with his arm around her shoulder. Next scene, Dong Won took Da Ae home, and in front of her place, there was Joon Soo, waiting in the dark and he saw Da Ae and Dong Won. As she was about to come down, Dong Won then asked her to go with him, so she closed the door back and they left. And so we see Joon Soo with this scary look on him as he sighed.

The next morning, the housemaid ahjumma vacuumed the floor while yakking away, pretending to do her work while clearly she hates the idea of having a guest in the house. This ahjumma is really… argh, I really wish Hye Jin fired her already! How dare she yelled and acted like that in front of a guest! Hmph.

Hye Jin then warned Sung Sook not to wear shorts like that in her house. And yes indeed, Sung Sook’s shorts are ermmm.. too short.

Next scene… Joon Soo arrives at Scarlette, looking for Da Ae.

So he waited inside for Da Ae, and at home, Hye Jin got a call from Dong Won… telling her another excuse not being able to come home, and that he’ll be going to Japan on a business. Hye Jin smelled trouble and got upset. She locked the door and ignoring Sung Soo who’s knocking outside her bedroom.

Not too long after, Da Ae came to Scartlet and before Byuk Ja told her about Joon Soo, the guy appeared from inside… looking really really really MAD.
