La Dolce Vita Episode 13

Lee Dong Wook, the man behind this cool shades, I must say he has taken a great challenge by taking up the role of Joon Soo. Very complex, but yet still appears as Mr. Softie when it comes to women, especially to those who matters to him. Who exactly belongs in his heart? Da Ae? or Hye Jin? A question that is still a mystery to me, though we’ve passed halfway through our La Dolve Vita journey.

Episode 13 is like a snowball rushing down from the mountain top as it reveals a great heart-opening revelation through each of the characters. Superb episode!

Last week, we were left with Dong Won dragging his wife away through the garage. I must admit, their house is one awesome mansion. And with that, I concur, Hye Jin has been living her life in a gold cage. She has everything but a faithful husband. What a pity.

Dong Won: You’re over-acting again.
Do you really think I’d beat you up here?
Hye Jin: What scares me is not your hand trying to hit me… but suddenly, the thought of not knowing the real you after so many years… it’s scary.
Dong Won: You are being difficult.
It feels like I met you for the first time.
Saying it again, you don’t feel like a human.
Hye Jin: It’s not like that.
Dong Won: What do you mean no…
Hye Jin: What I meant is…
Dong Won: Are you kidding me?
Ha… some things never changed.

Hye Jin: Yes, when you dragged my hand through the garage door, suddenly I had a scary thought. Who is this person? Who exactly is he? The fears clouded my thinking…though I don’t know where such fears came from… but though I see your face everyday, but suddenly, it feels like I don’t know you anymore.
Dong Won: Hey, do say somethng that make sense.
Hye Jin: When I don’t know who you are exactly, it scares me!
Dong Won: What are you so scared about?!
What did I do wrong? Besides cheating on you once?
Hye Jin: It’s not about what you did wrong…
Dong Won: Then what?

Then the conversation is getting nowhere, with Dong Won kept on insisting that Hye Jin is being ridiculously hysterical. Hye Jin tried to explain, but it just made Dong Won more worked up than before. He ripped apart his shirt and told her to go ahead if she wanted to look inside his heart, about who he really is.

Then Dong Won did something despicable and low, in which I think triggers Hye Jin to stand up on her own and finally decided what she wants to do with her marriage. Dong Won led her into the bedroom, almost ripped her clothes apart, and did it out of his ego, partially maybe he thought that was what they both needed at the moment. And boy was he wrong on that one.

The morning after, Dong Won acted like some magic happened last night, and he was deliriously happy. The girls saw him kissing Hye Jin’s cheek and they teased their parents about it. So cute.

As if he’s blind, Dong Won couldn’t see how mad and depressed Hye Jin’s face is. If only he’s sensitive enough, and gentleman enough not to cross that respect line between spouses, he’d probably able to repent and save his own marriage. Too late now~

Hye Jin’s thought: Everything seems strange.
My husband, my children, this house.. and myself.
I don’t even know myself anymore.
What ever happened to the world and my life that I knew before?
It’s all seemed like a forgotten memory…

At work, Hye Jin called Dong Won to tell him to pick up the girls. She didn’t say anything else, when Dong Won asked what she’s planning to do.. working at that travel agent again? Hye Jin apologized and hung up.

At the travel agency, Hye Jin told her boss that she’s moving out of her house and rented a small room to move in. Her boss is divorced too, so they both talked about their experience moving in from a big house to a small rented room, and possibly having to share the custody of their kids. She has three kids, and it turned out that her husband’s new wife couldn’t have children of their own, so the new wife is bringing up her kids instead. But Hye Jin said she’d hold on to her kids no matter what, though it’s shown that she was a bit shaken up by the fact that she might not be able to get full custody of Na Ri and Na Rae. Her boss warned her that it’d get tough, and Hye Jin should be mentally prepared from now on.

Meanwhile, in Da Ae’s store, Scarlet, Byuk Ja was trying to talk some sense into Da Ae, who was furious and felt guilty towards Hye Jin. That probably it was all her fault in screwing up Hye Jin’s marriage. She wanted to repent, though Byuk Ja said it’s Dong Won’s responsibility too to save his marriage. Da Ae wasn’t the only one who started this affair. Let Dong Won deals with his wife, she added.

But Da Ae felt the remorse to do something, so she prepared herself to go meet Hye Jin that day.
On the way there, In the car, she kept on memorizing what she’d say in front of Hye Jin and how she’d say it properly. She drove on with an eagerness to settle this matter down, and perhaps asking for forgiveness?

But alas, when she arrived at the destination, Da Ae saw something beyond her imagination, and it was like an arrow struck right through her heart and mind.

She saw this scene from a far, and like on cue, tears started falling down her cheeks and her eyes got all red and teary. As Joon Soo walked across to meet Hye Jin, the only thing Da Ae can see is their expression. The longing from their eyes, though the silent moment appeared in front of her eyes are as though a punishment for what she did to Hye Jin’s marriage.

In this scene, it’s very clear to me: Da Ae is madly in love with Joon Soo, and thought that Joon Soo really liked her first. Though she’s messing around with a married man, she was hoping to grab Joon Soo’s heart whenever she wants. Big mistake.

After putting two and two together, she smirked as if she just caught a deadly act of sin. Teared up, she slowly moved away after Joon Soo left Hye Jin, who told Joon Soo to leave her alone before she started hating him for what he did. Joon Soo gave her time, and backed off for now because he knew just when to move forward or to stay still.

Hye Jin: Why did you come here?
Joon Soo: You know my friend who fell down the mountain last winter?
Well they found his body. Because the snow have melted.
Hye Jin: That’s a good thing, of course?
Now that his body’s been found, there’s no need for you to go anxiously looking for it.

(then Hye Jin told Joon Soo she had to leave because her kids will show up soon)
(Joon Soo stayed there, just keep staring at her)

Hye Jin: Joon Soo ssi, don’t be like this.
If you do, you’re ruining everything.
We can’t hold on to each other… we shouldn’t try to.

Joon Soo: Just for a while…
Be there for me just a little while longer.
Hye Jin: Don’t make me end up hating you.

Crying Da Ae stopped her car in the middle of a bridge and jumped through the dividers as if she was about to commit suicide. Half laughing, half crying, she screamed and wailed.

The elevator door opens, and Joon Soo saw Da Ae sitting on the floor by herself, waiting for him.

Da Ae: Who is that woman?
Who the hell is she?
You like me.. you know you do!
Then why were you with her?
So did you go after her?
What kind of relationship do you two have?
For God’s sake, tell me how long you’ve been running after her!

Then Da Ae got all hysterical because Joon Soo wouldn’t answer a single question she threw at him.

Da Ae: Did you know she was that man’s wife when you met her?
Did you know that?
You did, didn’t you?
Say something!! This is killing me!!
You talk about me being a good person… but yet you live like this?
Why can’t you answer me!?!
Did you meet her in Hokkaido?
You did, didn’t you?
When I called you on my way to Paris, you were in Hokkaido, weren’t you?
So was that your first meeting?
But, no, it couldn’t have been.
You went there with her, didn’t you?
Fine then, if you won’t say anything let’s forget the whole thing.

Da Ae: Who made the first move?
Was it you or she?
Did she seduce you?
I know you liked me… so did she steal you away from me?
That’s it, isn’t it?
That’s why she wants to divorce her husband!
Joon Soo: That’s enough. Stop it.
Da Ae: The truth is out now, is it?
It’s because of that woman.
Joon Soo: Out of all people, you have no right to talk like that!
Da Ae: What?!
That woman cheated on her husband!
Joon Soo: Just drop it off!

Da Ae: Do you love that woman?
That’s why you’re being like this, aren’t you?
Because you’ve found someone you love?
Joon Soo: It isn’t like that. Our relationship isn’t like what you imagine.
Da Ae: What kind is it then?
Joon Soo: Didn’t you hear me ask you to stop?
Please don’t say any more.
I’m begging you. Stop it now!
Da Ae: You wouldn’t do that, would you?
You met her without knowing who she was and even now you were seeing her without knowing…

In the morning, Joon Soo greeted Detective Park after he arrived back in Seoul with President Kang and Seung Gu’s ashes. They had a talk not too far from Incheon airport, which I think the screencap made it so hot-shot with all the gesture and of course, Lee Dong Wook’s sunglasses, haha.

In the middle of nowhere, they had their private talk, while looking so suave like the screencap above. lol. Detective Park congratulated Joon Soo because apparently the Japanese police found no evidence of injuries that could be accounted by the fall, and they’re treating the death as suicide or accident. Then Joon Soo asked why Seung Gu got cremated in Japan. But the detective explained that because the body was such in a bad state, cremation was the only possibility to do. Then he asked why Joon Soo was curious, was he hoping to get a chance to take once last look at his dead friend’s face?

Then the scene goes to Dong Won and Da Ae. She arrived at the restaurant first, and waved at him to her table. They had a talk before Dong Won had to tell her the deal is off. “Let’s break up.”

Dong Won: What’s up?
Why did you call me?
Dae Ae: I just wanted to see you.
(this line can also be translated as “I miss you”, but for this scene, I think it’s better to have it as “I just wanted to see you”)

Dong Won: You wanted to see me?
Da Ae: Yeah. What’s wrong with that?
No ulterior motive.
I just felt like seeing you, so I called, that’s all.
Dong Won: But I thought you didn’t like it when we meet in public like this.
Too many staring eyes.
Da Ae: I don’t think like that anymore.
It makes life too complicated, so I’m going to try something a little different..
Dong Won: Works for me.
Da Ae: It depends on how you see it.
So what sort of changes do you have in mind?
What’s going to be different about how you live?
I have a more comfortable way of life in mind.
Dong Won: I thought you were comfortable enough already.
Da Ae: But I wasn’t. I was still feeling a bit guilty and uneasy.
Dong Won: Feeling guilty toward who? My wife?
Da Ae: Don’t you like that idea?

Dong Won: Let’s not meet anymore.
Da Ae: You mean… end our relationship?
But I don’t want to.
Dong Won: I was in the middle of something when I left work, so I have to get back.
Da Ae: Are we really breaking up?
Dong Won: Yup.
Da Ae: Just like that?
Dong Won: Would you prefer me to throw you a breakup party?

Dong Won: Any other suggestion?
Da Ae: Fine. Let’s call the whole thing off.
I could care less. Go.
Dong Won: You sure you’re okay?
Da Ae: Of course!

President Kang: You should scatter his ashes.
You were his one and only friend.
I also leave all of his possessions in your hands.
Joon Soo: Seung Gu also placed a bit of money with me.
Pres. Kang: Keep it.
Seung Gu’s money, apartment, car; don’t come consulting me about them.
I don’t want to deal with any of that, you understand?
Joon Soo: Yes, sir.
Pres. Kang: Go on now.
Joon Soo: I don’t know what to say… except that I should’ve taken better care of Seung Gu.
I’m sorry.

At night, when Joon Soo came home, a group of men in black have been waiting for him.

And somewhere over at the security guard post, two men held up the guard to keep quiet, while he turned off the CCTV video and popped it out to take it with them. Joon Soo tried to run away from the gangsters, but it was a brutal scene. So he got all beat up and left alone laying on the ground like a half-dead meat.

Meanwhile, Hye Jin was with her boss after taking care a group of Japanese tourists, and it was almost raining outside so her boss offered to take her home.

On the way home, Hye Jin carrying an umbrella, and played around with the orange flag, approaching the gate….

And while she was holding him like that, far above, Dong Won was watching her from the window….
